The harvest moon punch is great for all kinds of social gatherings. Although last time I had some, I woke up naked in the forest surrounded by my work friends in black robes. I must have been the guest of honor because they drew a giant star on the ground around me. I wasn’t freaked out, I just wanted some more of that punch!

Ingredients

  1. 1½ Bottle Bourbon
  2. 1 gallon of fresh apple cider
  3. 6 whole star anise
  4. 6 cinnamon sticks, plus more for garnish
  5. 6 whole cloves
  6. 8 oz brown sugar or demerara syrup
  7. Zest of 1 whole orange with very little white pith

Directions

Combine the apple cider, star anise, cinnamon sticks, cloves, syrup, and orange zest in a large stainless steel pot and let simmer over low heat for 30 to 40 minutes. Do not boil. Add the bourbon and simmer for another couple of minutes just to warm the whiskey. strain to remove all the spices and serve.

Notes

For a nonalcoholic version of the drink, simply omit the bourbon.

Fun Notes

For a party, you can serve the punch in a hollowed-out pumpkin: Prepare the pumpkin by cutting a lid as you would for a jack-o-lantern. Clean the lid piece by cutting away the pumpkin strands and seeds; save all of the seeds (see below). Use a long-handled spoon, clean the inside of the pumpkin, being careful to leave a thick pumpkin wall to ensure there are no punctures in the skin on the sides or the bottom.

When the pumpkin is clean, rinse the inside with cool water, checking for leaks in the skin. Fill the pumpkin with the warm punch and replace the lid to retain the heat. Using a ladle, serve it in ceramic mugs and garnish with cinnamon sticks.

10. The White Lady

Just to clarify, we’re not talking about the “can I speak to your manager” lady, we’re talking about the pale decaying lady who appears in the mirror behind you every time you brush your teeth…actually they might be the same person.
