What is a Hawthorn Strainer
Hawthorn strainers are used to strain shaken cocktails. They come in a variety of different styles. However, their main features are going to be preferring holes and a flexible spring coil. The coils are used to adjust to the size of the tin, which means you can own different size shakers and still be able to use the same Hawthorne strainer.
What to look for When Buying a Hawthorn Strainer?
Some of the things you want to look out for when selecting a Hawthorn strainer are:
- Tight fit
- Hole size
- Thumb rest
- Security notch
It’s important to select a strainer that has a large enough coil so that I could fit snugly over most tins, regardless of their size. A Hawthorne strainer should be big enough to fit snugly into just about any cocktail shaker or pint glass. This includes 16-ounce tins, 18-ounce tins, and even 28-ounce tins.
A strainer with large holes will not be very useful, as it will allow ice herbs pulp and other impurities into the drink.
You will definitely want one with a notch for your thumb so that you can press down on the strainer and provide even more security and stability while you pour.
Some strainers feature notches on the handle that will further secure the strainer to your cocktail shaker.
How to use a Hawthorn Strainer
To use a Hawthorn strainer, place it over your cocktail shaker tin, ensure it has a snug fit, and pour the contents out, allowing the strainer to hold back any ice and other impurities from entering the cocktail.
If you’re more of a visual learner take a look at the video below that goes over how to properly use a Hawthorne strainer.
1. A Bar Above Hawthorne Cocktail Strainer
We can’t talk about bartending equipment without mentioning products from a bar above. This brand exists solely to make us awesome Bar products.
It features very high-density springs that are sure to catch just about anything you throw at it. It also offers a convenient cut out to let you store or hang the strainer anywhere you’d like. The strainer also allows you to pour two cocktails at the same time.
This compact Hawthorne strainer is made out of 304 premium stainless steel, making a dishwasher safe. It’s made out of one solid piece of stainless steel, so there are no ugly welds, and it will never break, bend, or rust.
This is probably the best strainer on the market because of its high-density Springs, its compact, ergonomic design its it’s no-nonsense rest, and reasonable price point.
And it comes in a very nice box, making it a great gift option.
2. Cocktail Kingdom Koriko Hawthorne Strainer Copper Plated
When it comes to bartending tools and accessories, Cocktail Kingdom truly is the king. There’s just no denying it. And with this strainer, they really earn their crown. One of my favorite parts of this strainer is its minimalist design and its excellent branding on the handle.
This strainer is not your average strainer. It’s been in development for over two years, and it shows. The shaker is strong enough to take a hit and sports a very tight coil that can catch anything you throw of it.
This item includes one strainer. However, they have a ton of matching accessories you can add to your order.
Regarding the price, this is going to be in the medium range. Not too cheap but not too expensive. And while you may only be spending a couple of bucks more to get this one as a post to some of the cheaper options on the list.
This strainer is ideal for the mixologist who’s not afraid to show off their gear. This is definitely a flashy item that you will be proud to show off.
3. Pina Barware Commercial Compact Hawthorne Strainer
This strainer is small – very small. You can easily put this in your bag and go, making it perfect for a mobile bartender.
This strainer has a brushed finish and is made from 100% stainless steel, so it is dishwasher safe. This is a heavy strainer with excellent balance. It also has a very stylish some rest – that’s something you don’t see on every strainer.
One thing I really like about this strainer is that it doesn’t have any holes. At least not the circular holes that we would expect.
One drawback is that, because its holes are not very small, it has a chance of impurities entering your cocktail.
This is going to be by far one of the least expensive options on our list. This is surprising considering the high quality of the product and the brand name behind it.
This strainer is perfect for someone who has a bartending bag and needs something small to take with them.
4. Oxo Steel Cocktail Strainer
If you’ve ever used an OXO product, you know they mean business. All of their products are made with absolute attention to detail, and this strainer is no exception. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the over 2500 reviews they have. That’s a lot of happy customers.
Ergonomics is at the forefront of the strainer. It is perfectly made to fit within your grasp while preventing impurities from entering your cocktail.
Its thumb rest is angled in such a way to help you secure the strainer as effectively as possible. And its size allows for easy storage. Its compact size also makes the strainer a great option for anyone on the go.
The only drawback I really see for this product is that there is no hole for hooking it onto anything. And considering that the handle is not very long, it would be difficult to put it in a tin for storage. So the only real way to store this product is flat on its back or upside down. Not the most elegant option produce price point, you can’t really complain.
I didn’t think it was possible to have such a high-quality product be so inexpensive, but, somehow OXO has done just that.
5. Pina Barware Stainless Steel Commercial Hawthorne Strainer
Moving up on our list, we have the Pina Barware stainless steel commercial Hawthorne strainer.
What makes the strainer really special is its long handle. The handle allows for you to not only get a better grip on your strainer but help store the strainer in a cup or a tin when not in use. Pretty nifty, huh? The handle also provides much-needed balance.
It’s mirror polish to give it that extra shine, and it features a stunning pineapple logo on the center. That’s good branding.
This is a very reasonably priced strainer especially considering that it’s from one of the best brands in the bartending industry. Not to mention it has very high reviews.
One of the drawbacks of this cocktail strainer is that because of its long handle, there’s a possibility of the head coming apart from the handle. This has been the case for a few users. It may just be a few defective models. But if that’s a dealbreaker for you, that’s something to consider.
6. Hawthorne Bar Strainer By Modern Mixologist
This Hawthorne strainer is designed by the Modern mixologist himself, Tony Abou-Ganim. You might not realize it by the photo, but the spring on the strainer is absolutely huge. Almost comically large. That’s one of the things that makes it great.
It’s made out of stainless steel, Has a beautiful finish, and is large enough to hold a 28-ounce tin and 18-ounce tin, and a 16-ounce tin quite snuggle. I’m looking for a strainer that is sturdy at a fair price. This might be the one for you.
7. UPKOCH Copper Plated Cocktail Strainer
I really love the look of the strainer. It’s a little unusual, but that’s what makes it special. I particularly love the beautiful copper finish.
The strainer fits in most cocktail shakers mixing glasses and paint glasses. The strainer is made from polished food-grade stainless steel. And it is strong enough to resist bending and resting.
This strainer is probably best for someone a little bit more experienced, considering that it’s a little higher on the price spectrum when compared to other options on this list. But it can make a great gift for any cocktail craftsman, regardless of experience.
9. Barfly Classic Copper Plated Hawthorne Strainer
If you’ve ever had a Barfly product, you know they do not skimp out on quality. This is one of the nicest and most unique cocktail strainers I have seen. Just look at it! It has beautiful and unique diamond-shaped holes instead of circular ones. It’s got a beautiful and functional neck, and it has an elegantly branded hook hole, which looks almost like a keyhole. And The copper tones really give it an elegant and timeless look.
One of my favorite things about this strainer is its price. It’s one of the most cost-efficient cocktail strainers on the market. It also has some of the highest reviews of any strainer.
It’s made out of heavy-duty stainless steel, and it’s resistant against corrosion, rust, you name it. It features a very nice bent notch on the strainer’s neck so it can rest on the rim of a glass or tin. How awesome is that!
One drawback to this strainer is that it is plated, so it should only be hand-washed, meaning it’s not dishwasher safe. Unfortunately, but if things go awry with this beautiful strainer, not to worry because it has a limited lifetime warranty.
This, of course, would make a perfect gift for just about anyone. But particularly those who love beautiful craftsmanship and elegant designs.
9. Sky Fish Hawthorne Cocktail Strainer
Not too many bells and whistle’s on this one, but sometimes simpler is better. It features a hole on the handle that you could use to hang it on a hook if necessary.
The Sky Fish Hawthorne strainer is simple and competitively priced, and it has a ridiculously tight spring meaning that it will catch anything that comes through it.
The only drawback that I can think about this one is that it does not have the ability to pour two cocktails at once, so it won’t be great for someone working inside a bar. But if you’re at home and you’re making drinks for yourself, this is the ideal strainer for you.
10. Joly, 5″ Stainless Steel Hawthorne
Hey, sometimes size matters, and sometimes it doesn’t. The first thing that you will notice about this strainer is that it’s really, really small. That’s part of its charm, and its functionality.
The strainer is made with heavy gauge stainless steel that can take a beating. The tight coils fit snugly around the rim of any cocktail shaker. It allows liquid to pass through while retaining any ice or herbs that might try to sneak into your cocktail. It features for stop tabs to maximize stability and minimize spills. And unlike some of the other options on this list, this one is dishwasher safe.
Regarding price, this is a reasonably priced strainer, especially considering how beautiful it is.
This product is absolutely ideal for anyone traveling. If you have a cocktail bag, this is the perfect item for your kit. So if you’re always making drinks on the go, this is the one for you.
